Quick answer
Allow about 1 hour 50 minutes from central London or about 1 hour 5 minutes from Heathrow to Southampton's cruise terminals, plus a buffer of at least 45–60 minutes for traffic. Plan your pickup around the boarding time your cruise line gives you, not the sailing time, and choose an MPV if you have several large cases.
How long does it take to get to Southampton cruise port?
| From | Typical drive | Distance | Transfer page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central London | About 1 hr 50 min | About 70–80 miles | London cruise transfers |
| Heathrow Airport | About 1 hr 5 min | 61 miles (98 km) | Heathrow to Southampton |
| Southampton → Heathrow | About 1 hr 5 min | 61 miles (98 km) | Southampton to Heathrow |
| Southampton → London | About 1 hr 50 min | 70 miles (112 km) | Southampton to London |
Times are for normal traffic. The M3 and M27 can be slow on summer Saturdays and bank holiday weekends, which are also peak changeover days at the port.
When should I leave for my cruise?
Your cruise line assigns a boarding (check-in) time, usually several hours before sailing. Work backwards from that slot:
- Take your boarding time from your cruise documents.
- Subtract the typical drive time from the table above.
- Subtract a traffic buffer of 45–60 minutes (more on summer weekends).
- That is your pickup time. Arriving very early rarely helps – terminals manage arrivals by slot.
Example: a 12:30 boarding slot from central London means a pickup at around 9:45–10:00.
Which terminal will my ship use?
Southampton has several cruise terminals – City, Mayflower, Ocean, QEII and Horizon – operated by Associated British Ports. Your cruise documents name the terminal; ABP Southampton publishes the ship schedule. Tell us the ship name when booking and we take you to the right terminal entrance, close to luggage drop.
How do I make disembarkation day easier?
- Book the return before you sail, so the car is confirmed for your disembarkation morning.
- Give us your ship name – we track its arrival and your driver meets you at the terminal exit.
- Flying home the same day? Allow for disembarkation time plus the drive; a Southampton to Heathrow transfer takes about 1 hour 5 minutes.
- Choose the right car: cruise luggage is bulky – an Executive MPV or minibus keeps the whole party in one vehicle.
Do you cover other cruise ports?
Yes. We also run Dover, Harwich and Portsmouth cruise transfers, plus Tilbury. See the Southampton cruise transfers page for meeting points and fixed prices.
